What is a yunomi?
A yunomi is a tall Japanese tea cup for everyday green tea, made to be held in both hands. Unlike the wide chawan used in formal tea ceremony, a yunomi is taller and narrower for daily use.
Why do Japanese tea cups have no handle?
A yunomi is handle-less by design: single-wall porcelain lets you cradle it in both hands and feel the tea's warmth and temperature. Brew green tea a little cooler and fill the cup about three-quarters, and the rim stays comfortable to hold — for everyday sencha or hojicha.
Are these tea cups really Kutani ware?
Yes. Every cup is Kutani ware, hand-painted by studio artisans in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan — the home of Kutani porcelain since 1655 — and arrives in a wooden gift box.
Are the cups safe for everyday use?
Yes, they are functional porcelain tea cups. Hand-wash with a soft cloth and avoid the dishwasher and abrasives, as the overglaze enamels and any gold accents sit on top of the glaze.
